Our May box features Fayth from Amygdala Home who has used her background in interior design and a passion for wellbeing, to create affordable, hand-made, vegan-friendly products from her workshop in Battle, West Sussex.

The Amygdala collection is hand-blended and lovingly crafted, with each scent carefully selected to evoke fond, forgotten memories and to help create a sense of peace and calm. We know we can all do with a haven to retreat to when life gets overwhelming!

With sweet base notes of vanilla this luxurious scent will help you feel the warmth of the sun on your face, whilst watching the sun go down, bringing the magic of Morocco to you.

It’s time to meet the maker… We caught up with Fayth from Amygdala Home!

How long has your brand been going/ is it full time or do you do other things?

I started Amygdala Home in June 2020 and is now my full-time job. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to do this. Having created a job where I can take our 8-month-old baby girl to the studio with me is such a joy. Trying to navigate life as a new mum and business owner can be tricky at times but incredibly rewarding.

Where in the UK are you based and what space do you use for your ‘workshop’?

Hastings, East Sussex. I recently moved into a beautiful new studio in the countryside in Battle.

What inspired you to start making candles?

All my friends and family knew my love of candles and home fragrances for a long time. It was their go to for a present for me so it was no surprise to them when I told them about Amygdala Home. I have always been creative and loved making things with my hands, the messier the better! I completed a degree in Interior Design and Architecture and although I still love this and would love to branch Amygdala Home into this, I found that it was lacking a physical creativity.

We moved to Hastings at the end of 2019, 4 months before the first lockdown in 2020. It is such a beautiful part of the country with so much inspiration everywhere. Amidst lockdown 2020 having spent almost 3 months in our home, I was challenged by the products used in our homes from the ingredients in cleaning products, air fresheners candles, I was surprised at how toxic the ingredients in these products were. Alas, Amygdala Home was born with a drive and passion to create affordable, handmade, vegan and clean products we can use in our homes at an affordable price.

Do you have a passion that has been embedded in your brand?

I would say the main passion which is embedded throughout the brand is to help connect my customers to the meaning of what an ‘Amygdala’ is and how it affects everything we do. A lot of our reactions through the amygdala are subconscious especially when our ‘flight or fight’ mode is kicked into gear. Having the realisation that we have control over these feelings and scents that evoke these memories feels like a wonderfully powerful thing.

Through each one of my products, I hope to evoke a memory which brings an array of emotions but mostly joy and peace. My hope is that from the products I create, from the quality to the scents, make you want to use them again and again in your home, to create an almost heaven which you can retreat to when life feels slightly crazy.

What do you love about our featured scent?

Moroccan Sunset is Amygdala Home’s best seller. With notes of Sandalwood, Amber and Lavender it is a perfect all year-round scent. Perfectly complimenting a cold, rainy and dark winters evening with deep notes of amber but also uplifting in the spring and summer months with those calming, fresh notes of lavender.

There are so many scents you can choose to make…How do you go about choosing for your collection?

I personally go for scents that are slightly muskier over sweet or artificial smelling. As I started to explore the different oils that can be used in candles, I found that I could create unique musky scents, with a hint of sweetness. When creating a scent, I also imagine which room is most likely to have it in and what emotion I’d like to feel in that room. I see Moroccan Sunset to be a scent for all over the house, but mainly in a living room where you’ll curl up with a blanket, hot drink and a cosy film after a long day.

What has been your proudest moment since starting out?

I have had a lot of proud moments since starting the business. From having stockists across the UK to meeting customers face to face at markets. I think the proudest moment to date would be securing the new studio as it is a tangible reminder of how hard work can pay off and feels very rewarding to see the business organically grow.

Do you have a fun fact or anecdote about your brand?

A lot of people don’t know what an ‘Amygdala’ is so I love having a conversation about this which adds a real depth to the brand.

Do you have any specific ambitions or goals for Amygdala?

I would love Amygdala Home to grow into a brand where people hate to replace the product they have in their home for any other brand. I am also working towards having a team in which I can grow the business further with. As an entrepreneur and creative, I love having the space on my own but I do miss working in a team where we bounce ideas between each other.

Is there anything that you believe makes your brand different or stand out?

I am a firm believer when it comes to designing that less is more. This mentality helped me when I began designing the concept and branding for the business as there are so many products screaming for your attention in each shop that often it’s the simple, yet sophisticated branding which stands out to me. Weaved throughout the ‘A’ logo on each candle label is a hand drawing of the top note of each candle.

Are there any plans for new products or news over the next few months?

There are always so many products I’d love to make so I must reign it in from time to time. However, expect to see development of the products which will be more in line with the foundations of the brand identity.

So there we have it, a candle and a little something extra to bring the aromatic smells and spices from the streets afar into your home and to allow you to dream of warm sand beneath your toes! Happy burning, Iggy Boxers!
