21 May Iggy Box Reveal | May Candle Maker
Welcome to your May Iggy Box… ‘To plant something new is to believe in tomorrow…’
Meet our May Maker…
This month our featured maker, Jemma, hand-pours her gorgeous candles from a stunning 150 year old studio in the heart of Lancashire…
Introducing the beautiful ‘Old Man & Magpie’.
This family-run business started 6 years ago, by creating hand-painted furniture from reclaimed wood. The brand name was inspired by the birth of their daughter, nicknamed ‘Magpie’ for her love of shiny objects!
The scents we have chosen from Jemma’s gorgeous collection, really encapsulate the great outdoors… think fragrant gardens, sweet smelling plants and earthy vegetable patches.
Wicks Inside My Box…
This month, we are featuring two scents from Old Man & Magpie inside our boxes.
Our floral candle for this month is ‘Eucalyptus’… Using a beautiful essential oil derived by steam distillation from the Eucalyptus leaf, this is a really fresh scent with a touch of sweetness. It’s vibrant, invigorating and a perfect pick-me-up whatever the season! When your candle is finished, why not even use your jar as a vase for some fresh Eucalyptus!
Our fruity candle for this month is ‘Greenhouse’… A beautifully crisp and fresh scent taking you straight into a wonderfully fragrant greenhouse with powerful hits of tomato leaf, cucumber and watercress. You may even find notes of apple peel, among the lingering notes of basil, thyme and oregano. Totally fresh and totally wonderful.
The wax facts…

EARLIER THIS MONTH, WE SAT DOWN WITH JEMMA, TO TALK ALL THINGS CANDLES…
How long has your brand been going and is it your full-time job?
Old Man & Magpie has existed for just under 6 years. It started as a furniture making company run by my partner Garry. I joined the business about 3 years ago. Initially I was making very small batches of candles in my spare time. I’ve been running the candle side of the business full-time for the past two years, after leaving my 13 years career as a clothing designer.
Where do you make the candles?
I started, like most people, from my kitchen at home. I worked from home for around 2 years which was both a help (no commute) and a hindrance (having no ‘off’ switch). About 12 months ago Garry moved into a larger workshop which now incorporates both the woodworking workshop and my own candle making studio.
What inspired you to start making candles and your brand?
I’ve always been creative and I enjoy setting myself little tasks and projects. A friend bought me a handmade candle as a gift and I thought “I wonder if I could have a go at making candles myself”. I started to experiment with different waxes and scents and found the whole process really relaxing and therapeutic and it helped me switch off from my busy and stressful day job. I thought it would be a nice idea to make a batch to give as gifts to friends and family.
After a few months Garry asked if I could make some handmade candles for our business inspired by scents from his workshop – Oak Wood, Sandalwood, Cedar Wood and other woody scents. These first candles were listed online via our Etsy shop and they sold out almost straight away. That gave me the confidence to take it a little (or a lot) further.
Who inspires you the most?
I take inspiration from so many different places. Be it friends, people I meet, art, music & travel. My scents are mainly inspired by memories – nostalgic travel tips to India, walking by the coast or through the countryside and from the smells that come out of our woodshop.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
I really feel like I’m achieving things every day – I’m still in the mindset of every sale being an achievement. Some of the bigger landmarks I’ve experienced include some amazing stockists (including 6 National Trust gift shops), having three magazine features and of course, working with Iggy Box. I’m also proud of our website and all the wonderful feedback I receive.
Do you have a fun fact or anecdote about your brand?
Oh, I can’t think of a fun anecdote but Old Man & Magpie is actually Garry (the old man) and our daughter Esme (the Magpie).
The name came about when Garry was trying to figure an unusual name for his furniture business. He was a stay at home dad at the time and said that he felt like an old man looking after a magpie (Esme’s nickname) – and there it was – the name Old Man & Magpie was born!
Do you have any specific goals for Old Man & Magpie?
Neither myself or Garry are big on goal setting as we’ve learned not to look too far into the future. I try to just keep making the next right decision for me, my family and for my business and then see where that leads me. I would say that I’m aiming to collaborate with people doing exciting things and build on our wholesale portfolio.
So there you have it, our May reveal and ‘Meet the Maker’… we hope that you enjoyed learning a little bit more about Jemma and her beautiful Old Man & Magpie candles.
We also hope that your May candles bring a smile to you and if you have gifted a box to someone special, we hope it brings a smile to their face too.
Thank you as always, for all of your continued support and kindness that you continue to show us and our community.
Happy burning Iggy Boxers!
