We are delighted to bring you two gorgeous candles from our featured maker based in Surrey. Hand poured into beautiful concrete grey vessels with unique copper lids, they were love at first sight for our team at Iggy Box…

How long has your brand been going and is it your full-time job?
I started Coppertop Candles in May 2019, so I’m coming up to my first birthday soon! The ideas, testing, blending, planning and creating the brand/products was a lot longer in the making before I officially launched though! It was important to trial different soy waxes, essential oil providers and blends to create the best scent throw and also promote well-being aromatherapy qualities too. I ran the business as a side project to my day job as the Business Lead/CFO of an Academy school, until February 2020, when I realised life was too short to miss out on seeing my family and not using the creative part of me that I really loved.
What inspired you to start making candles and your brand?
As a mum of 2 young boys, I really looked forward to putting on a candle at the end of the day as a treat once the kids were in bed and I finally got to sit down! I wanted to share that experience with other people, how the atmosphere can change with a candle and the well-being benefits that can be achieved using essential oils. Having a bit of ‘me time’. Aside to that, I was wearing lots of different hats. I was a mum, or a wife, or a boss, or a friend, or a carer – all things I loved – but creating Coppertop was something that I did just for my own self-development – self-care if you will! I love making things and I didn’t get the chance in my day job to use that part of my creative spirit.
Where did the name ‘Copper Top’ come from?
When I was deciding on the name for my business, I wanted to make sure it had an identity. Something that made it stand out from a crowded market, something memorable. After many fruitless brainstorming sessions one of my best friends said, “you definitely have to have your hair in the name” (I’m a red-head!) and that as they say is history. And from the name, the aesthetic and packaging of all my products were born. For those wondering about branding, I say embrace who you are, be proud of what makes you unique and use your difference to empower your product.
What is your passion behind the brand?
I am passionate about creating products that are high quality, non-toxic, eco-friendly, but also ones that look simple and stylish. I love Interior design and I wanted to create a product that not only smelt amazing and lasted a long time, but one that people wanted to ‘display’ in their homes. The packaging of the candles incorporates the ‘Coppertop’ brand name and each jar can be re-used too.
Who inspires you the most?
I’m sure this is going to sound really cheesy, but all the amazing women in my life. I’m blessed to know some super strong, sassy, normal, wonderful, down to earth, caring, independent, smart ladies just ‘doing their thing’. Whether that’s owning a business, working hard, being a mum, supporting and caring for others, they really do inspire me to be a better person and to have a positive outlook on life.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
In terms of my business, it would definitely be starting my own venture and then featuring in Iggy Box, my biggest order to date and such a wonderful opportunity. If you had said even a year ago I would own my own business, I wouldn’t have believed you! In terms of life, definitely my two boys! They are wild, but amazing.
Do you have a fun fact or anecdote about your brand?
Did you know the fantastic ‘Earl of East London’ taught me how to make candles?! I went to one of their workshops in London just for some me time… Who would have thought back in April last year, how things would have grown!
